How to celebrate Lobster season in Belize

For the second year in a row, Belize has had to postpone our beloved Lobster festivals, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still celebrate in spirit! Lobster season officially opened on July 1 and runs until February 2022, allowing for plenty of time to indulge in the delicacy that is the spiny crustacean.

About Lobster Fest

The popular Lobster fests, arguably Belize’s biggest festivals, are traditionally celebrated in three locations across the country: Caye Caulker, San Pedro, and Placencia. Weekend-long festivities hijack these beach destinations, drawing crowds from all over Belize (and the world.) Lobster dish contests, lobster fishing competitions and more are the entertainment backbone at these events.

Making the most of it

While the pandemic may have deterred the festivities once again, to our relief a way to still participate is available to those seafood-aficionados that don’t want to miss out on the open season. Placencia is offering a Lobster Crawl, a self-guided tour that takes you through 10 different establishment throughout the town. Taking place on July 2, 3 and 4, you get to taste lobster in all its unimaginable forms across the peninsula town.

The Isla Bonita of San Pedro is also hosting its own Lobster Crawl in the first week of July as a celebration to the opening of the lobster season. Prices are at an all-time-low, and the crawl covers 11 of San Pedro’s well-known high-caliber restaurants. Live music, games and Lobster Fiestas abound, the event runs until July 10, so you have some time to join in on the fun!

Bonus perks

Several accommodations are also offering specials and deals during this time, coupled with coveted lobster dinners as well. Imagine enjoying a large, Gordon-Ramsay-approved lobster mac-and-cheese at a resort’s on-site restaurant. Beachfront, waves crashing and a gosh-darn good hearty meal. It can’t get better than that!
