Swallow Caye

Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary, established in July 2002, is a protected area managed by the non-profit conservation organization, Friends of Swallow Caye. Its primary mission is to safeguard the West Indian manatee population that inhabits the area. Located just four miles east of Belize City and 19 miles southwest of Caye Caulker, this nearly 9,000-acre sanctuary is a vital refuge for these gentle marine mammals.

The sanctuary’s regulations minimize human impact and ensure a safe environment for the manatees. Upon entering the sanctuary, watercraft must cut their engines and navigate manually using poles, preventing potential harm to the manatees from propellers and engine noise.

Visitors to Swallow Caye can observe manatees in their natural habitat from the comfort of their boats, making it a unique and tranquil experience for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. By following the sanctuary’s guidelines, guests contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts aimed at protecting this endangered species.
